I Detest Marketing Agencies, So I Co-Founded One

Updated: Nov 7

Hi, I’m Chasity Gibson, co-founder of LaunchWave Consulting, and the article below is my journey into the world of marketing agencies—not with glowing praise but with a real, unfiltered look at what pushed me to create one myself. Spoiler alert: it’s pure frustration and the need to prove agencies can and should do better.

Co-Founding a marketing agency

The True Story Behind LaunchWave

After years of working in the corporate grind, I've had my fair share of encounters with marketing agencies, and let’s just say many of those experiences were far from stellar. In fact, a staggering 99% of my interactions with agencies left me frustrated and disillusioned. Why? Because they often fell short on delivering quality work and authenticity.

The All Too Common Pitfalls

  1. The Cookie-Cutter Approach:

Every time I worked with a new agency, I’d find that they relied heavily on generic solutions. No two brands are the same, yet too often, clients were handed off a one-size- fits-all strategy that just didn't fit. I saw firsthand how this approach failed to resonate with audiences and lead to real results.

  1. Lack of Brand Ownership:

Agencies sometimes treated their clients’ brands like jobs on a checklist—there was no emotional investment. This left businesses feeling disengaged and unrepresented; as if their unique identity was diluted.

  1. Bullshit Reports:

If I had a dollar for every time I received a flashy report overflowing with jargon but void of actionable insights, I’d be, well, running my own empire. These reports often sidestepped the core question: Were we really moving the needle?

  1. Inexperienced Talent:

More often than not, I encountered fresh-faced marketers with barely any experience. They were eager, sure, but they lacked the real-world expertise to guide strategy effectively. It was like taking financial advice from someone who just graduated from college.

The Turning Point

I reached a point of burn-out and frustration, fed up with the cycle of mediocrity I had experienced. I realized that if I wanted to create an impact, I needed to build something different. This led to the birth of LaunchWave Consulting—a place where exceptional work is done, and every team member is valued and empowered to thrive.

Creating a Supportive Space

I wanted to prove that an agency could achieve brilliant results while treating employees well and fostering a safe environment.

  • Empowering People: At LaunchWave, we prioritize a culture grounded in respect, trust, and personal development. A happy team produces better work, leading to client success.

  • Tailored Strategies: We focus on individual client needs, using our collective expertise to craft customized solutions that genuinely reflect each brand's identity and goals.

  • Transparency and Accountability: Instead of shiny reports filled with fluff, we provide clear insights and actionable recommendations. Our clients deserve to know what's working, and we hold ourselves accountable.

The Impact of Right Collaboration

It’s no secret that the right partnership with a marketing agency can transform your business. The key is ensuring that agency aligns with your values and goals. Look for a partner that:

  • Takes the time to understand your business and audience.

  • Offers a diverse skill set rather than a single, generic approach.

  • Values transparency and continuous communication.

Conclusion: A New Era of Marketing Agencies

Creating LaunchWave Consulting was my way of flipping the script—turning frustrating experiences into a beacon of hope for other startups and businesses. If you're feeling apprehensive about working with agencies, remember there are exceptional ones out there, but due diligence is key.

You don’t have to settle for mediocrity. Seek out partners who value quality work, brand integrity, and genuine relationships. Your brand deserves that—and more. Here's to building a marketing future that puts people first!
